AG Nandlall denies Mocha “squatting” land now being used for commercial development

Attorney General Anil Nandlall is maintaining that the Mocha squatters who were removed from land near the new 4-lane highway, were removed for the construction of the highway and nothing else.

During his “Issues in the News’ television programme, Mr. Nandlall sought to rubbish claims by the Opposition that the land that the squatters once occupied is now being made available to large businesses as commercial property.

Last week the Opposition released a video which showed that construction work has begun along sections of the land.

But according to the Attorney General, most of the land was used for the highway with the remainder serving as a shoulder to the road.

“The government removed those squatters for the construction of a highway—the Heroes highway and the highway has been built, anyone can go there and see the highway—it is built, these guys are making up stories,” the Attorney General said.

The Central Housing and Planning Authority issued a statement earlier this week accusing the Opposition of peddling propaganda on the issue.

According to the CHPA, the government used the land for the construction of the highway.

“The other important thing is, most of the squatters took compensation from the government and they got titled land free, they got their house built free, they got compensation to move and those who didn’t accept the compensation of the offers of the government have sued the government and we are in the high court,’ the AG stated.

The Housing Ministry had said that statements from the Opposition on the issue are erroneous and mischievous and are intended to create racial strife.

The Opposition maintains that the Mocha residents were displaced from the land for the benefit of large businesses which are now preparing the land for their buildings in the same area.
