Airports and non-essential businesses to remain closed as Emergency measures extended

The Government has ordered that the national emergency measures that are in place to fight the coronavirus will remain until the 3rd June.

The measures were expected to expire on Sunday, but with the numbers of coronavirus cases still climbing, the Public Health Ministry recommended that the curfew and other measures be extended by a month.

With the extended measures, the international airports will remain closed, only allowing cargo, medical and specially authorized flights to operate.

The continued closure of the airports could cause a bigger headache for hundreds of Guyanese who are stuck in the US and other parts of the world and want to come home.

There are over 200 Guyanese workers on cruise ships who are still hoping that some consideration will be given to them and they be allowed to return home on a special flight.

There are also students in Cuba and other Caribbean countries who have indicated a need to come home.

The extended measures also mean that non-essential businesses will have to remain closed and those that are allowed to be open will have to follow the strict timelines for their opening hours.

Additionally, churches and other religious organisations will not be allowed to conduct services.

Only funeral services and weddings with a small number of persons will be allowed.

The national curfew will remain in place with increased efforts to ensure persons remain off the road between the hours of 6 pm and 6 am.
