As the Foreign Affairs Ministry continues to probe press reports that newly appointed Ambassador to Kuwait, Dr. Shamir Ally has a criminal past, it has been revealed in legal documents that Dr Ally was never criminally charged or convicted of a crime.
The documents which are available online point to a civil suit taken against Dr. Ally and a company he was associated with. Two other persons were also sued in the same criminal suit.
The Kaieteur News had smeared Dr. Ally as a “convicted fraudster” over the civil suit about incorrect financial information being provided.
Today Minister of Public Security and Leader of the Alliance For Change, Khemraj Ramjattan said the media must be careful when reporting on such issues. He said while the government readily accepts criticism and is following up on various reports, there is the need for fair criticism.
Speaking specifically on the appointment of the Ambassador to Kuwait, Ramjattan said it does not appear that Ally disclosed his legal troubles from over 10 years ago, but with those legal troubles not being criminal, it is unclear whether the probe into his background will now take on a different turn.
Earlier this week, Foreign Minister Carl Greenidge, said the Foreign Ministry would be probing the reports but said due diligence was done before the appointment.
