Contending that Guyanese are experiencing economic challenges, particularly those living in poverty, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) today challenged the Government to increase the cash grant to citizens aged 18 years and older to no less than $150,000.
On the elections campaign trail earlier this year, President Irfaan Ali hinted at the possibility of Guyanese benefiting from a second tranche in time for Christmas, but with just 20 days left before the Christmas holidays, there has been no announcement about a cash grant in time for Christmas.
At a press conference today, APNU Parliamentary Leader, Dr Terrence Campbell said there should be a “prompt increase” in the cash grant to alleviate the financial burdens of citizens.
“Citizens require this Christmas Relief to cope with rising living costs and poor infrastructure which increase costs and stress for vulnerable, hinterland, rural and struggling citizens amid heightened expectations,” Dr Campbell said.
The coalition estimates that by December 2025, approximately 604,000 citizens will qualify for the cash grant.
Dr Campbell said the proposed grant of $150,000 per citizen will result in a total expenditure of $90.6 billion – an amount, he said, represents a manageable percentage of the total projected government revenues.
He submitted that in addition to easing the financial struggles facing Guyanese, the cash grant would stimulate the local economy.
“The cash grant is essential for those struggling with basic needs. It will provide immediate support and enhance their quality of life. The cash grant will increase cash flow among citizens is expected to boost local economies, as beneficiaries will likely spend the grant on essential goods and services. This infusion of cash can stimulate demand in various sectors, promoting job creation and economic revitalization,” MP Campbell said.
Campbell said the cash grant should not be seen as a mere expenditure, but as an investment in the well-being of citizens, and the Government should approach the Parliament soonest to initiate the approval process for the proposed cash transfer to ensure prompt disbursement.
