APNU will not field any candidate for Opposition Leader’s election

Parliamentary Leader for A Partnership for National Unity, Dr. Terrence Campbell today made clear that his party will not field a Candidate for the position of Opposition Leader when the Speaker convenes the meeting for election of the Opposition Leader on Monday. He said it is expected that WIN Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, will emerge from the meeting as the Opposition Leader, since his party holds the majority of seats on the Opposition side.

“WIN has 16 seats in the National Assembly out of the Opposition of 29. WIN has clearly said that there will be on candidate for the Leader of the Opposition from WIN which is Mr. Azruddin Mohamed. It is our expectation that Mr. Azruddin Mohamed will be elected as the Leader of the Opposition,” Dr. Campbell told reporters during a press conference today.

It is almost three months since the 13th Parliament was convened and the Opposition Leader is expected to be elected on Monday.

WIN has long said that its Leader Azruddin Mohamed will be its nominee for the position.

But both the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Government of Guyana have expressed their reservations over Mohamed holding the key portfolio.

Mr. Mohamed, is currently fighting off extradition proceedings and remains sanctioned by the United States.

For his part, the Speaker said he has a duty to protect the integrity of the House, while for the Government’s part, the Attorney General noted that Mr. Mohamed’s elevation would leave a ‘stain’ on Guyana’s Parliament.

“There will be on nominee for the position of the Leader of the Opposition. The APNU has no intention of putting up a candidate for the position of the Leader of the Opposition and it would be futile for Forward Guyana to do, there will be one nominee for the Leader of the Opposition and it is our expectation that person to be declared leader and there will be no need for a vote,” Mr. Campbell said.

Meanwhile, APNU MP Ganesh Mahipaul said the APNU remains open to collaborate and work with the WIN party to confront the government, despite its earlier efforts at collaboration not bearing fruit.

“The APNU has made several attempts to speak with WIN in terms of Parliamentary agreement, in terms of even the region 10 matter, but I want to importantly mention that the door to cooperation as an opposition. The door to unity as an Opposition and togetherness in our approach as we confront this barbaric People’s Progressive Party has not been shut”, he said.

The WIN party has been developing a parliamentary agenda of its own.
