Dutch businessman, Vitesh Guptar, who won an extradition hearing back in 2024 after being found in Guyana, has indicated through his Attorney that he never struck any agreement with the Italian authorities causing the extradition request to be dropped. He denied the statement recently made by Attorney General Anil Nandlall that the extradition request was discontinued because the businessman cooperated with the country seeking his extradition.
Guptar’s Attorney, Ronald Daniels, in a statement today said his client went through the local Court system and won his case, which resulted in the extradition request being thrown out by the Court.
He said his client “categorically denies that he assisted the Italian government, in any way or manner, with the provision of any information of any form, either upon their request or at his own instance, as he was and is not possessed of any information relative to the matters the Italian government is investigating”.
The Attorney maintained that Guptar’s matter was determined upon the merits of his case and he was not committed for extradition as the evidence furnished by the requesting state did not meet the legal threshold to commit for him to be extradited.
“He acknowledges that he was contacted on several occasions by a senior member of the Guyana Police Force in this regard, and he maintained on every occasion that he knew nothing that was helpful to the Italian government in the conduct of their investigations,” the Attorney stated.
The Attorney said while the Attorney General accurately narrated the chronology of events, Court fixtures, and determination of the request from the Italian Government for the extradition of Mr. Vitesh Guptar pursuant to allegations of conspiracy to traffic narcotics, the issue regarding his client providing information to the Italian government never happened and should be clarified.
