Three years after his escape from the Lusignan prison, murder suspect Paul Goriah has been recaptured in neighbouring Suriname and is likely to be returned to Guyana within days.

Goriah and two other men were nabbed in Nickerie recently during an armed robbery.

He initially identified himself as Kevin Smith, but when his photograph was sent to local Police, they identified him as the wanted prison escapee.

Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels told News Source that he has confirmed the identity of Goriah based on a photograph that was sent to local authorities by their Surinamese counterparts.

Mr. Samuels explained that the Guyana Police and the Surinamese Police are working on Goriah’s transfer to Guyana.

Goriah was among a group of 13 prisoners who escaped from the Lusignan Prison in July 2017.

While the majority of escapees were recaptured, Goriah was among a small group that evaded the authorities and escaped without a trace.

At the time of his escape, he was awaiting trial for the murder of a farmer.
