Former acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Sonia Joseph has been confirmed as the new Legal Advisor to the Guyana Police Force.
Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan confirmed the appointment this morning.
The post of Police Legal Advisor became vacant after retired Justice Claudette Singh took up the position of Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) a few months ago.
The Legal Advisor to the Guyana Police Force is usually tasked with providing guidance and advice to the Police on various matters including on investigations and the building of cases.
The position also requires advice to be given to the Force for the taking of caution statements and using information based on the gathering of evidence and supervising the preparation of cases for prosecution.
In the recent public advertisement for the position, one of the requirements also included providing support to the Police Force in the training of Criminal investigators and Prosecutions.
The advisor as part of her duty is expected to make recommendations to the Police Force on any legislative changes subject to review by the Ministry of Public Security.
