The Guyana Police Force has launched what it calls a “comprehensive” investigation against the Chief Election Officer and the Returning Officer for Region Four after it said it received formal reports of alleged criminal misconduct by the two.
While the Police Force would not say who submitted the formal reports, it indicated that the allegations of criminal conduct are related to the 2020 General and Regional Elections and issues that followed the elections.
The Police Public Relations Office said that upon receipt of the reports today, it sought and got advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions and the the Force’s Legal Advisor to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the allegations in accordance with the mandate of the Force.
News Source understands that it was the Crime Chief Wendel Blanhum himself who reached out to the DPP indicating that he had received the reports.
The Police Force did not provide details of the allegations.
However, in relation to the private criminal charges that were filed by the PPP and the New Movement Party against the Chief Election Officer, it was announced by the Police that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is taking over the private charges in accordance with the powers of the DPP.
The Attorneys for the Chief Election Officer have written to the DPP requesting that the private criminal charges be withdrawn. The DPP’s office had indicated that it was awaiting the statements in the case before a decision could be made.
During Mr. Lowenfield’s last appearance in Court, the case was postponed to allow time for a response from the DPP.
Agents of the PPP and TNM filed the private charges in the aftermath of the March elections, claiming conspiracy by the Chief Election Officer to commit fraud.
Their Attorney had indicated that he intends to provide more than 400 statements to back up the claim. It is unclear whether he ever provided the statements.
