The new Bamia Primary School in Linden, which was being constructed by St8tement investment Inc., has been completed and handed over to the Ministry of Local Government. The school was opened this week to students and teachers.
The $346 million contract to construct the school was awarded in November 2021. The construction was plagued by missed deadlines and multiple delays. The project was initially slated for completion in July 2023.
In early 2024, the Government provided additional funding of $127 million to expedite the completion of the school, with a new schedule completion date for April 2024, but that new date was also missed.

When Minister Priya Manickchand took over the Local Government Ministry in September, she visited the school on her first day and issued a deadline to the contractors, while warning that the contract will be terminated if that deadline was missed. The deadline was missed, but the school was very close to completion.
Now completed, the construction company is describing the school as one of the most advanced schools in Guyana and the wider region.
“We are extremely proud to deliver this project for the children of Linden and grateful to the Government of Guyana for the opportunity to contribute to national development. We look forward to continued partnership to play a key part in Guyana’s transformation,” the project contractor Kerwin Bollers was quoted in a statement as saying.

The new school features 44 classrooms, smart classrooms, a gymnasium, an auditorium with a performance stage, library, science lab, music room, sick bay with showers, and other among other amenities.
