Bandits snatch millions in pension money from BV Post Office

Several pensioners in the Beterverwagting and nearby areas on the East Coast of Demerara were forced to go home empty-handed on Tuesday morning after gunmen attacked and robbed the Beterverwagting Post Office of millions of dollars in pension payments.

The incident took place just after 9:30 am as the postal workers were processing the pension payments. Two armed men ran into the post office and forced everyone including the workers and several pensions to lie on the floor as they carted off the cash.

A glass screen which separated the workers from the customers was shattered by the bandits. The men made off in a white Toyota motor car and left traumatised workers and pensioners and other customers behind.

The Guyana Police Force has launched a full investigation. The Guyana Post Office Corporation has also launched an inquiry of its own into the latest robbery at post office during pension payments. News Source understands that the post office should have had security arrangements in place with two armed guards.

A few months ago, the Carmichael Street Post Office was attacked and robbed during pension payments in a similar fashion. Before that incident, post offices in Kitty Campbellville and at Linden were also robbed.

Pensioners across the country would access their monthly payments from the human services Ministry through the Post Offices. There have been calls for the Ministry to devise a better payment plan and arrangement in wake of the steady robberies at the post offices.
