Berbice man arrested and charged for gruesome murder of friend after being on the run since August

A deportee, who is suspected of also being a drug dealer, was today remanded to Prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for the murder of Berbice fisherman, Levan Chanderpaul.

47-year-old, Munilall Sarjou, stood before the court this morning and was emotionless as the charge of murder was read to him.

He is accused of beating his friend, Levan Chanderpaul, to death and dumping his body in a sandpit. The incident took place between the 22nd and 26th August 2016. The man’s body was discovered by a young boy who was grazing his sheep in the Backdam.  Five persons were initially arrested and questioned.

The accused has been on the run since August 2016, and was only arrested a week ago.

Attorney Leslie Sober represented the defendant and told the Court that the Prosecutor does not have enough evidence to charge his client and a case was now being built.

Sarjou was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance at the Springlands Magistrates’ Court on April 19th 2017.
