Just 10 minutes after celebrating the start of the new year, a Corentyne man was stabbed to death during an argument during new year’s celebration at a bar in Crabwood creek, Corentyne.

The Guyana Police Force reported this morning that 24-year-old Asif Hafeez was at the bar imbibing with friends when he got into an argument with another man.

The argument turned violent and the man stabbed him to the neck.  He was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Investigators are on the hunt for the assailant.

The Police Force also reported this morning that a Brazilian miner who has so far only been identified as “Brian” was shot dead on Wednesday night when an armed man barged into his mining camp in Puruni Backdam, shot him to the neck and made off with a quantity of raw gold.

A suspect has since been arrested by the police.  Charges are to be laid shortly.
