As Guyanese are being encouraged to double up on their precautions against COVID-19, the virus continues to surge with the Minister of Health revealing this morning that in the past 24 hours, the country has recorded 967 new cases of the virus.
That number eclipses the country’s previous record for the number of new cases in a day, which was set the day before.
The total number of active cases in the country now stands at 3481, but only 70 persons are hospitalized across the country with six of them requiring intensive care.
Region Four which is home of the nation’s capital and largest population spread continues to see the highest number of new cases. The number of active cases in Region Four has been pushed to 2289.
The Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, has admitted that while tests to determine the omicron presence in Guyana are still to be completed, based on all the evidence being presented in the past three days, it is clear that the faster-spreading variant has been present in Guyana for weeks.
“From the 28th December right onto now, we have seen a doubling of the cases…these numbers are going to go up but fortunately most of the people who have tested positive, most if not all of them, have mild symptoms”, the Minister said during a press briefing yesterday.
He assured also that the Ministry of Health is prepared to address the situation, although many of its own staffers have been forced to take time off from the job after testing positive for the virus.
Unvaccinated persons are at a higher risk of suffering severe illness from the new variant and they are being encouraged to get vaccinated soon.
