Merchandise trade between Guyana and Canada totaled CAD $238.2 million in 2021, the High Commission of Canada has disclosed.

According to the High Commission, exports to Guyana for 2021 were valued at CAD$28.6 million, while imports from Guyana were valued at CAD$199.6 million.

In 2020, the Canadian High Commission played a leading role in bringing together private sector leaders from Canada and Guyana to form the Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce.

According to the Canadian High Commission, this month marks a second year of growth and significant success in fostering trade between the two countries. The Chamber currently has 65 members, having started with 28 companies of diverse business interests.

“In its short two years of existence, the CGCC has seen several partnerships formed between Canadian and Guyanese businesses, including the recently announced partnership between the Beharry Energy Holdings and Atlantic XL out of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and the joint venture between Farfan and Mendes Limited and Crosbie Group Limited. These are only two of the many business collaborations and investments among the CGCC members,” the High Commission said.

In addition to pursuing partnerships, the High Commission said over the last year CGCC was represented at trade summits and conferences in both Canada and Guyana.

In applauding the work of the CGCC, its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Treina Butts, the group continues to work with members to find complimentary local partners as Canadian companies are desirous of working in Guyana with local companies across several industries.

As a leading trade partner with Guyana for decades, the Canadian High Commission said it will continue to integrate Canadian and Guyanese businesses to support the multiple economic developments in both countries.

“Looking ahead into 2023, the Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce has several major activities planned, including a Women in Business Trade Mission which will put the limelight on the robust women owned Canadian and Guyanese businesses, providing them with a unique opportunity to partner and grow their business in both markets,” the Commission said.
