The regional grouping, CARICOM, has welcomed the Posthumous Pardon granted by the Biden Administration to Jamaican civil rights and political activist, Marcus Garvey.
In expressing its gratitude for the posthumous pardon granted by the President Joe Biden administration, CARICOM said the long-awaited exoneration is testament to the unwavering advocacy of CARICOM leaders, both individually and collectively, along with countless members of the diaspora, for the rectification of the unjust conviction of an ardent advocate for the rights and liberties of individuals of African descent.
Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in the 1920’s in the United States. His tireless work as a civil rights activist is believed to have triggered the work of other civil rights activists in the US, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
CARICOM said the life and work of Marcus Garvey continue to inspire and influence both within and beyond the Caribbean.
