China offers to further push investment and infrastructure development in Guyana

Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali met and held discussions today with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to a statement from the Chinese Government, President Xi expressed the willingness of his government to support the advancement of the ‘One Road, One Belt’ Initiative in Guyana, while simultaneously assisting with the implementation of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).

The Chinese leader said his government wants to further promote the investment and infrastructure strategy.

The statement also said that during the meeting, Chinese companies were encouraged to invest in Guyana in various areas.

“China encourages Chinese enterprises to invest in Guyana, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in energy, mining, finance, agriculture and fishery, infrastructure construction and other fields, and cultivate new growth points such as new energy and green development,” the statement read.

The Chinese President, according to the Chinese Embassy also congratulated Guyana on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, noting that “China supports Guyana in playing a greater role in international and regional affairs, and is willing to work with Guyana to practice true multilateralism, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and jointly address climate change, food security, and energy security and other global challenges”.

Meanwhile, in a brief statement on Facebook, the Office of the President said President Ali in his remarks, highlighted Guyana’s firm commitment and adherence to the One-China principle.

He said China continues to play an important role in the economic and social development of Guyana and the Caribbean region, not only by sharing its experience but also providing valuable assistance in developing infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare and other areas.

President Ali and a large private sector delegation are currently on an official visit to China.
