A total of nine cellphones were among several prohibited items found inside the New Amsterdam prison during a joint services operation over the weekend.
In a statement, the Police said that in addition to the nine phones, the operation also uncovered lighters, cigarettes, improvised weapons, scissors, four bottles of wine and a quantity of marijuana.
The Police did not indicate whether an investigation has been launched into the smuggling of the items into the jail.
Just recently a prison officer was arrested and charged in connection with the smuggling of prohibited items. Last year, a number of other prison officers faced similar accusations.
