A ‘crime walk’ involving citizens, the police and members of the business community will take place on Saturday May 7th, 2016.
The walk will seek to raise awareness of the crime situation in the country and will end with a rally where solutions will be explored.
It begins at 7:00am at the Cultural Centre tarmac and will see citizens marching through several city communities before coming together for a rally at Parade Ground.
Organizer and senior member of the Guyanese Women Roundtable (GWR) Dr. Dawn Stewart called on citizens to come out in their numbers and participate.
Citizens, companies and organisations are encouraged to create signs that read “stop the crime, stop the violence” and come out and participate.
“Guyana must not be known as a murder capital, Guyana must not be known for thieves. Guyana must be know for its historical greatness and the beauty it has,” Dr. Stewart said.
She explained that it was a “low budget walk” with a mission to bring awareness to the reduction of crime in communities.
The walk is being organised at a time when their is widespread public perception and opinion that crime is on the increase. The police maintain that there has been no increase in serious crime when compared to the same period last year.
Stewart said citizens feel like crime is on the rise and believes the walk is relevant. “It is apolitical and can be used by citizens citizens to bring awareness of what is the perceived increase in crime.” She said citizens must themselves begin to stop condoning and hiding criminals.
