Civil Aviation Authority releases guidelines for use of drones in Guyana

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has released guidelines and safety procedures for the use of those unmanned aerial vehicles, better known as remote-controlled drones.

The move comes following a recent incident when someone flew the gadget close to a Guyana Defence Force helicopter and over the military headquarters.

In a statement, the Civil Aviation Authority said persons or companies owning the drones for professional use will now have to apply to the authority for permission before they take them to the friendly skies.

The Authority sees professional drone users as “persons or companies that operate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for non-recreational purposes, including business-related activities such as, but not limited to, aerial photography, surveillance, geometric surveys, power line inspections, crop observations and research and development.”

Before those persons begin their professional use, they will have to apply to the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority in writing for approval, providing all details of the intended operation. The GCAA said those persons “must not commence operation, unless written permission is obtained from the GCAA.”

And for those persons who have the drones for private and recreational purposes, they should not fly above 400 feet and should not be flown beyond a 1600 ft range from the person controlling the device. Persons should also not operate the drones over open air space of people.

Additionally, the drones should not be flown over private or public property without permission of the owner. They should also not fly them near airports or landing strips for aircraft. More information on the guidelines could be provided directly from the GCAA by calling (592) 225-6822.
