The Ministry of Human Services has announced the setting up of a Commission of Inquiry to examine the operations of the Camal’s International Home in Corentyne, Berbice.
The home caters for orphans but was thrown into the spotlight recently when three teenage orphans ran away from the home claiming that they were being abused and being held under inhumane conditions.
The three teens were arrested by the police and that arrest triggered a protest for their release by the Benschop Foundation and other social activists.
In a statement released on Monday evening, the Human Services Ministry said “in light of the recent arrest of the three orphaned teenagers who resided at Camal’s International Home in Corentyne, Berbice and based upon public allegations of maltreatment of orphans residing at the institution, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services & Social Security has appointed a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations and review the operations of the Home in accordance with the Minimum Operating Standards for Children’s Homes and Institutions.”
The members of the Commission of Inquiry will be:
Mrs. Ayo Dalgetty-Dean – Chairperson
Ms. Saudia Feroze – Member
Mrs. Erma Bovell – Member
Mrs. Joan Ann Edgill – Legal Counsel of the Childcare & Protection Agency
Mrs. Claudia Munroe – Senior Probation & Social Services Officer
The three runaway orphans as well as other orphans and caregivers at the home are expected to be questioned.
