Two men, one of whom admitted to swallowing more than 20 cocaine pellets, were on Tuesday refused bail after being charged for conspiring to traffic the illicit substance.
The duo made their appearance in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Judy Latchman and employed several strategies to avoid having their photographs taken by the media.
The swallower, 35-year-old Dwayne Adams of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara first pleaded guilty to the charge but later changed his plea to not guilty, upon instructions from his Attorney.
Adams ,however, admitted ownership of the drugs which amounted to 848 grams but denied conspiring with 44-year-old, East Ruimveldt resident Herbert Smith, who he claimed was sleeping at the time.
Smith, a father of four, entered a not guilty plea.
According to reports, both Smith and Adams were occupying a hotel room at the Alpha International Hotel at Ogle, East Coast Demerara on November 13 when ranks of the Customs Anti – Narcotics Unit (CANU), acting on information, invaded the room.
By that time, Adams had swallowed a total of 25 pellets which he later passed out while in custody.
Attorney Peter Hugh represented the defendants and argued that the conspiracy charge was misplaced.
He reasoned that it could not be a conspiracy with one person claiming ownership while the other claims not to have any knowledge.
The Prosecution could not provide facts to support the conspiracy charge. However, Magistrate Judy Latchman denied the two men bail and remanded them to prison until December 7.
