Corentyne girl dies after reportedly falling through hammock

Police in Corentyne are investigating the death of an 11-year-old girl.

The young girl, identified as Tinesha Johnson was discovered motionless this morning on the ground beneath an old hammock in the family’s yard.

Her mother had just left the yard to purchase fish from a mobile vendor, when one of her other children raised an alarm.

The mother, Latoya Johnson reportedly rushed back into the yard, only to discover her daughter lying under the hammock with blood coming out of her nose.

The mother picked up her daughter and rushed her to the Skeldon Hospital where she was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead on arrival.

The shocked and confused mother said she is not sure how exactly the child died, since she was unaware of any illness that might have been affecting her.

Persons in the area suspect that the child might have fallen out of the hammock and possibly hit her head.

A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the cause of death. The 11-year-old girl was a student of the Leeds Primary School.
