For the second straight day, Guyana recorded two coronavirus related deaths, pushing the number of total deaths to 46.
The Health Ministry this afternoon revealed that the two latest fatalities are both women. One was an 84-year-old from Region 4 while the other who hailed from Region One was 47-years old.
With the two deaths recorded today, it takes the total number of deaths recorded in the past four weeks to 26. There were 20 deaths in the previous four months.
During a press conference this afternoon, Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony said the increase in deaths is worrying, but he also noted that many of those who have passed away had underlying conditions.
The COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit is to be expanded now that the country has received additional ventilators. The Health Minister told reporters this afternoon that more will now be done for critically ill COVID-19 patients.
The Health Minister also revealed today that efforts are continuing to reduce the large backlog of tests still to be completed. He said the Ministry is awaiting the results from more than 500 samples sent to Trinidad for testing and once those samples return, another 500 samples will be sent.
There are close to 1000 samples currently in the backlog.
