At the High Court today, 33-year-old Troy Jackson was sentenced to nine years in jail following his conviction yesterday of engaging in sexual activity with a seven-year-old girl.
As a plea of mitigation before sentencing, the man’s Attorney brought a character witness.
The woman recounted that the convict had a tough life growing up and lost both of his parents at a young age. The Court was also told that he lacked education and proper upbringing.
The Judge after listening to the mitigation handed down the nine-year prison sentence.
Jackson was taken away to jail just after the sentence was handed down. Yesterday he broke down in tears after the guilty verdict was handed down on him.
Just last week, the Child Care and Protection Agency revealed that over 800 Guyanese children were sexually molested last year.
The agency has started an aggressive campaign to tackle the growing problem.
