A Cuban national died tragically today in a workplace accident, as a concrete wall that was under construction collapsed on him at Bachelor’s Adventure on the East Coast of Demerara.
The dead man has been identified as Dairobis Martinez, who was among four persons working at the site when disaster struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and is suspected to have died from multiple injuries.
News Source understands that the property under construction was rented to Chinese nationals, however, it is owned by a Guyanese living abroad.
Minister of Labour, Keoma Griffith visited the scene of the tragedy, and told reporters that the Labour Ministry will be launching an investigation into the deadly incident.
“From what we have been told the eastern wall at this construction site, collapsed inwards, and from what we have been told from initial reports given to me by investigators, police officers, somebody was trapped under the concrete that fell inward and I believe that person is now deceased,” Minister Griffith said.
He said the Labour Ministry is awaiting additional information from the police even as it conducts its own investigation.
Mr. Griffith also announced that the Labour Ministry will be ramping up inspections to ensure that work places adhere to the labour laws of the country.
“I intend to come into the field, come onto worksites, and get inspections done, and to see that all construction sites are complying with Occupation Health and Safety requirements. That is something that is essential to my function which I intend to execute. In the coming days, I intend to visit as much site as possible,” the Minister said.
Minister Griffith said departments have also been set up in every region to ensure that Occupation Health and Safety inspections are done.
