The life of 84-year-old retired Headmaster, Moses Elias was snuffed out on Friday morning when a fire that investigators suspect was deliberately set, ripped through his Beterverwagting home.
In a statement, the Guyana Fire Service said it received an emergency call at around 4 o’clock on Friday morning about a fire along Plot Obaz in the East Community of Beterverwagting.
Firemen said when they got to the scene, they encountered the wooden and concrete two-story building engulfed in flames, and immeidately started their fire-fighting operations.
The fire moved through the house quickly and Firemen were unable to save the building or its contents. When the fire was eventually fully extinguished, the charred remains of Moses Elias were found.
The former Headmaster lived alone and was very active in the church. It is suspected that he was asleep when the blaze started. The Fire investigators said based on their initial probe, it is suspected that the fire was set deliberately.
