More than a week after 146.9 pounds of cocaine was discovered stashed in a unit load device at the Cheddi Jagan Airport, Timehri, the investigations are ongoing with no suspect in custody.
An airport worker who was initially held for questioning was released without any charges being filed against him. The cocaine was about to be loaded onto a KLM Airlines flight to Amsterdam when the bust took place two Saturdays ago.
News Source understands that investigators from The Netherlands were in Guyana to offer assistance to local investigators and gather additional information about the bust. Additionally, security officials from KLM were also in Guyana to probe the attempt to load the cocaine cargo onto the aircraft.
Investigators suspect that there may be Guyanese links in Europe and South America that formed part of the efforts to get the cocaine out of Guyana.
The bust was made by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Agency, which discovered the cocaine in 53 plastic wrapped parcels stashed at the bottom of the unit load device, which is used to load cargo and luggage onto an aircraft.
Last year, three staffers at the Cheddi Jagan Airport were arrested and charged following a similar attempt to load cocaine onto a British Airways flight.
CANU has been conducting a number operations to curb drug trafficking with the assistance of local and international counterparts.
