Embarrassed Police Force quietly returns journalist’s firearm after no link found to shooting of his car

After issuing a full statement announcing that it had requested the firearm of journalist Travis Chase for testing as part of the investigations into the shooting up of his car, the Guyana Police Force quietly returned the journalist’s weapon after ballistics tests found no links between his weapon and the spent shells discovered at the scene of the shooting.

Head of the Police Force’s Corporate Communications Unit, Mark Ramotar, today said the investigations into the shooting incident are ongoing, while indicating that the tests carried out on Mr. Chase’s weapon were all inconclusive.

The Senior Journalist this afternoon confirmed to News Source that his firearm was returned to him after the tests found no links to the shooting of his car last week.

And it was only after Mr. Chase pointed out in the Police PR WhatsApp group that his car had not been returned to him after several days, that the Head of the Corporate Communications Unit informed him that he could uplift the car from the Criminal Investigations Department.

Chase said previous attempts to get back his car were met with statements from the Police that the car could only be released when the Seniors at CID give the go ahead for its release.

Two Mondays ago, Chase was visiting a relative at Cemetery Road and Durban Street, when a lone gunman on a motorcycle opened fire on his parked car, moments after he had exited the vehicle.

The journalist said he believes that he was the target of the shooting and linked it to his reporting of various incidents related to the Guyana Police Force.

He said he became more suspicious when the Police requested his weapon for testing, initially claiming that the spent shells found at the scene had similar markings to the ones the Police Force had in its custody for his weapon after he purchased it and was issued a license.

With that possibility now being blanked, efforts are ongoing to identify the motorcycle riding suspect.
