The Guyana Police Force announced today that it dispatched one of its officers to New York recently to serve a summons on US-based, Guyanese political activist Rickford Burke, for him to appear in Court in Guyana on cyber crime charges.
In a statement, the Police Force said Assistant Superintendent of Police, Rodwell Sarabo, was sent to the US where he met with a process server and together the two served the Court documents on Burke at his Brooklyn home.
Burke has been wanted by the Police for over two years on various offences related to alleged statements made by him against Government officials on social media.
Questioned today by News Source about whether any extradition requests have been filed for Burke since the first wanted bulletin was issued for him more than two years ago, the Head of the Police Force’s Corporate Communications Unit said he will have to check on that.
Charges related to cyber crime offences were filed against the outspoken political activist in 2021, with fraud conspiracy charges being filed against him in 2022.
Burke has repeatedly dismissed the charges as a political witch hunt and has accused the Police Force of taking political directives.
In a recent statement, he said he was forced to contact the New York Police Department after two unknown men were seen outside his house taking photographs after leaving a document there.
The Police Force stated that the defendant summons which were served on Mr. Burke is for him to appear in Court in March 2024 to answer the various charges filed against him.
Burke has been living in the US for more than two decades. He said the Guyana Police Force has no jurisdictional powers in the US to serve him with any Guyana Court document.
