One way traffic flow on Regent Street from Thursday to Sunday -Traffic Chief announces

The Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department has announced that with effect from Thursday and up until Christmas Eve Day, traffic along Regent Street will only be allowed to proceed in a western direction, effectively only allowing one-way traffic along the street for the next four days.

During an online radio interview today, Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, explained that the initial plan was to have Regent Street operate as a one-way on Christmas Eve day alone. However, taking into consideration the early build up of traffic along the busy shopping roadway, a decision was made to initiate the one-way plan much earlier.

“Regent Street will be for a one-way flow of traffic from as early as tomorrow, Thursday, and that will be for the westbound flow of traffic. And what that will translate to, is more free movement of all forms of road users, And what it will also translate to, is the ability of the Police to work in partnership with the public and private sectors and all other persons who are right-minded and are using the road to ensure that they have access to the places that they wish to go”, the Traffic Chief said.

Over the past week, the already busy Regent Street has become even busier with more street vendors taking up spots to cash in on the holiday shopping. The increased shopping has led to an increase in traffic along the roadway, which in most cases, would be bumper to bumper traffic.

With the street being restricted to a one-way traffic flow for the coming days, additional Traffic ranks will also be placed along the road to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

It was also made clear that for drivers traveling along those roads that intersect with Regent Street, they will only be allowed to cross Regent Street and continue on their journey, or turn in the western direction. The Traffic Department has made it clear that there will be no east bound traffic along Regent Street over the next four days.

The Traffic Department has been trying to address the build up of traffic in the commercial area in Georgetown, and continues to warn motorists against reckless and inconsiderate use of the roadways.
