The Guyana Fire Service has enlisted 107 persons from across the country to join its ranks and the recruits were celebrated during its first graduation exercise for 2026.
33 of the new recruits are women.
Chief Fire Officer, Gregory Wickham noted that the government continues to support the upgrading of the Fire Service not only by providing new and modernized equipment and buildings, but by also setting the stage to making the service attractive for persons interested in joining the profession.
“Without our human resource capacity, we will be unable to reach our strategic goals and so that is the importance that this graduation ceremony brings with 107 recruits coming directly into the workforce, they will be spread across all ten administrative regions at fire stations and the public can expect more from us because we are here to serve,” the Fire Chief noted.

The government over the last few years has pumped more than a billion dollars of new equipment into the Guyana Fire Service, they include a new fleet of pickups, ambulances, fire bowsers and water tender.
Mr. Wickham said while the force continues to welcome these investments from government, its human resources remain paramount.

“As we develop with our strategic plan to reach every citizen with fire prevention and fire safety and as the entire public knows, we have had great development when it comes to our mechanical resources—fire tenders and every other piece of equipment to ensure that we do firefighting throughout our country saving lives and properties from destruction of fire—that also needs support of our human resources and so this graduation ceremony brings with it that energy and strategic support that will allow us to execute,” Wickham noted.
At its graduation ceremony, the Fire Service awarded firefighter Trevon Williams as the best graduating student. He also copped the prizes for best drill and best theory.
The runner-up was Tomicka Crawford, who was also awarded the Best Female Firefighter..
