Dolphin Secondary School teacher, 30-year-old Tineka Hicks, lost her life tragically this morning in a smash-up involving a mini-bus along the new Diamond Interlink Road on the East Bank of Demerara.
Several other persons were injured in the accident, including four teenage students. The accident occurred at around 8:30 am.
According to reports, the mini-bus was being driven at a fast rate during heavy rainfall along the four-lane roadway when the driver lost control as he was overtaking another vehicle on the wet road surface.
The mini-bus flipped over several times, according to eyewitnesses, and only came to a stop after rolling off of the roadway and slamming into a nearby drainage system.

The teacher was pinned in the bus and it took several minutes and the efforts of other drivers and persons in the area to assist in getting her out.
Emergency Medical teams were summoned to the accident scene and the 30-year-old teacher was pronounced dead, while the injured persons were rushed to the hospital with multiple injuries.
The driver of the mini-bus has been identified as 52-year-old William Gomes. Police investigators administered two breathalyzer tests to the driver, but there was no trace of alcohol in his system.
He was taken into custody and informed of intended prosecution.
