The Department of Culture has announced that several activities will take place on December 31, 2015 leading straight into January 1, 2016 to user in Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary year.
Events are expected to take place in all 10 Administrative Regions, with the lead event taking place at the Independence Arch on Brickdam.
The National Communications Network will begin national radio and television broadcast of the festivities from 11:39pm on Old Year’s night.
President David Granger will give a seven minute address to the Nation just before midnight and his address will be followed by the sounding of the sirens at all Police and Military installations across the country.
Ships that will be docked in Guyana at the time across the country have been asked to sound their horns just before midnight and there will also be the pealing of bells at places of worship at 11:59 straight into the new year.
The Guyana Defence Force will then showcase a fireworks display that will last for at least 15 minutes and that will be followed by a cultural show at the Independence arch site featuring several local artistes including Lisa Punch and Ryan Hoppie.
Organisers have announced that seating will be made available at the Cuffy Square to accommodate families who will be part of the celebrations.
