Fly Jamaica gets Guyana Flag carrier status

The Government of Guyana has granted flag carrier status to Jamaican registered carrier, Fly Jamaica. The move will pave the way for the airline to operate direct flights between Guyana and New York.

The Government’s Chief Spokesman, Dr. Roger Luncheon on Wednesday said that the administration had played it’s part in setting the stage for the airline to begin operations but the airline would have to complete the remaining arrangements with the U.S Authorities.

News Source understands that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 11, 2013 dispatched a diplomatic note to the U.S Government via the local embassy, informing the United State authorities of the decision to grant the airline flag carrier status and government’s approval for its operations.

A senior official at the Foreign Affairs Ministry explained to News Source that once that letter would have been dispatched, it’s now up to the U.S Authorities and the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority to grant all other approvals.

Fly Jamaica has paid over a G$40 Million bond to the Guyana Government in preparation for the start of its service here. Reports state that the airline will now have to await final approval from the American authorities to begin full operations. Fly Jamaica intends to operate direct flights between New York’s JFK Airport and Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan Airport, Timehri.

Sources close to the airline have told News Source that with staff members and management teams already hired and trained for the Guyana operations, the granting of approval by the U.S Authorities is the last step that the airline needs to overcome before it begins its schedule service.

Fly Jamaica is co owned by Guyanese pilot Captain Ronald Reece and a team of Jamaican investors. The carrier started it operations in Jamaica earlier this year. The Guyana operations are expected to also include a schedule service to Toronto, Canada.
