Former Deputy Mayor Lionel Jaikarran found dead at home

City businessman and former Deputy Mayor of Georgetown, Lionel Jaikarran was found dead this morning in his Parade Street, Georgetown home.

The 56-year-old’s body was discovered at the bottom of an indoor stairs by his housekeeper this morning when she reported for duty.

It is suspected that he might have collapsed while making his way up the stairs.

Jaikarran who operarted an optometry company and once served as the President of the Georgetown Cricket Club, was the Deputy Mayor of Georgetown between 2016 and 2018.

He ran for office as an APNU+AFC candidate. He stepped away from the City Council and active politics in 2018.

As news broke of his sudden death, many of his close friends expressed their shock and memories on social media, while offering condolences to his wife and children.

He traveled often between Guyana and the US where his family lives and in 2020 was among the first group of Guyanese to be flown home after being stranded in the US because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of airports.

Jaikarran is being remembered as a thoughtful, friendly and caring person who had great love for family, the city of Georgetown and the game of cricket.
