Four policemen under arrest for accepting $6M bribe to let cocaine pass

Four police officers have been placed under close arrest for allegedly accepting $6 Million in cash as bribe money to release a bus with over $18 Million worth of cocaine.

The Guyana Police Force on Thursday morning announced the investigation into the alleged corrupt transaction involving four of its own.

Senior police sources confirmed to News Source that the ranks were reportedly carrying out a road block at Whim on the Corentyne Coast when they intercepted a mini-bus with a large quantity of cocaine.

The bus had three occupants and they were all detained along with the cocaine until the $6 Million was handed over. Once the money was passed over, the policemen allowed the occupants of the bus and the cocaine to continue on with their journey to the Surinamese border area.

While two of the ranks have reportedly confessed to the crime, the other two have declared their innocence.

News Source understands that at least two well known drug pushers in Georgetown and in the Berbice area are linked to the cocaine that was found in the bus and it was the two drug pushers who reportedly paid the $6 Million in hush money over to the policemen.

A full investigation was launched and the file is expected to be dispatched to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

The Guyana Police Force statement said “the Police Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating an alleged corrupt transaction involving a number of police ranks following the seizure of a quantity of cocaine from a motor vehicle along the Corentyne, Berbice, on September 10, 2015.”

According to the statement, “an Assistant Superintendent of Police has been transferred from the Division to Police Headquarters, and a Subordinate Officer and three Constables are under close arrest as the investigations continues”.
