GDF Sergeant dies in Homestretch collision

A Sergeant in the Band Corps of the Guyana Defence Force lost his life last evening after a head-on collision between the car he was driving and another car on Homestretch Avenue.

The dead man has been identified as 36-year-old Brian Mitchell of Craig Street Campbellville. His 7-year-old son was injured in the accident and is hospitalised with a broken leg.

Two occupants of the other car have also suffered various injuries.

The injured driver, Taishan Shanks told investigators that he was driving east along Homestretch Avenue in the vicinity of Help and Shelter when the car that was being driven in the opposite direction by the soldier suddenly pulled out from behind another motor vehicle and slammed directly into him. Both cars spun across the roadway before coming to a stop.

Two ambulances arrived on the scene and immediately attended to the injured persons. The soldier was initially pronounced dead on the scene but on the insistence of his wife who arrived at the scene, he was taken to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

The dead soldier’s 7-year-old son is the only person still hospitalised from the accident.
