GECOM Fires campaigning presiding officer

The Guyana Elections Commission has cut ties with a Presiding Officer for the Elections after it received information and evidence of her campaigning for the PPP Civic.

The woman, Jenny Shaw, was slated to work as a Presiding Officer in the Enmore community on the East Coast of Demerara on Monday. However, once the Elections Commission got word and saw evidence of her campaigning for a political party, she was dismissed.

GECOM Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Ward, confirmed that the Presiding Officer had been “removed”.

Presiding Officers are responsible for overlooking the elections process and tallying the votes at the close of polling, as well as preparing those statements of polls for their polling station.

During training, the Elections Commission warned its staff members against being involved in campaigning or partisan political activites.
