The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued a call for local groups and organizations desirous of observing the upcoming Local Government Elections to apply for accreditation no later than May, 12.
The presence of Local Observers is intended to enhance transparency, credibility and impartiality in the conduct of the Local Government Elections which are set for June 12, 2023
The Elections Commission has indicated that Local Observer Groups must fulfill five minimum standards in order to be accredited.
GECOM said at a minimum, observer groups must be familiar with electoral laws and procedures, and clearly state their experience in monitoring elections, and or their experience in electoral related training either locally or internationally.
Importantly, GECOM said observer groups must have the ability to maintain professional independence and strict impartiality in the conduct of their duties. Added to that, they are also required to demonstrate a commitment to democracy and human rights.
Observer Application Forms can be found on GECOM’s website – www.gecom.org.gy.
“All decisions taken by the Guyana Elections Commission pertaining to approval or denial of applications for accreditation as local observers shall be final,” the Commission said.
The call for Local Observers comes days ahead of Nominations Day, which is set for Monday, April 17.
News Source understands that more than 60 individuals and groups have submitted their symbols for the June 12 Elections, however, their eligibility will be dependent on their submissions on Monday.
