Government rehires James Singh as Head of CANU

The Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Home Affairs has rehired former Head of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, James Singh to once again serve in that position.

Singh was removed from the position in 2017 under the last government following a Commission of Inquiry into the release of a drug boat and its crew from CANU custody following a bust.

There was a concern that the release of the boat may have been influenced by a foreign government.

The boat was not found with any drugs, but it was suspected that it may have been used to make a drug drop off or pick up in international waters.

Though the findings of the Commission were not made public, it was felt that Singh would have to take ultimate responsibility for the release of the boat even if the was not directly involved.

With Singh given his marching orders by then Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan, the head of the National Anti Narcotics Agency, retired Major General Michael Atherly took over the management of CANU.

Atherly’s contract ended recently and the PPP Civic government decided against its renewal, instead choosing to rehire James Singh for the post.

Singh’s first day back on the job was today. He had been serving as a Security Consultant to one of contractors for the oil companies in Guyana.

His previous stint at CANU ran from 2008 to 2017.
