Not the time to go to war with nurses and doctors -Opposition warns Govt.

With an ultimatum about to expire for the beginning of talks to address the concerns of healthcare workers, the opposition is warning the government that now is not the time to go to war with the nurses and doctors in Guyana.

The APNU+AFC today said it was horrified by the “abhorrent and disgusting threats” issued by Attorney General Anil Nandlall and the PPP government against the frontline health workers.

In a statement this past weekend, Nandlall warned health workers that they could be fired and face additional repercussions for striking at this time. His comments has incensed the health care workers and their union.

The APNU+AFC today reminded that in several other countries, healthcare workers have protested over concerns about their working conditions during the pandemic.

The party said it is, therefore “unconscionable, heartless, wicked and constitute intimidation and bullyism”, for Nandlall to be issuing threats against the health workers.

The Opposition reminded that industrial action is a lawful option available to all workers and Mr. Nandlall is misinformed with his position.

The coalition is calling on the administration to show compassion, care and consideration and engage with the health care workers, understand their needs and provide an acceptable risk allowance, better salaries and improved conditions of work.

“To bring charges against health care workers and terminate their contracts at this time is to jeopardize the health and lives of the Guyanese people and may very well constitute criminal conduct on the part of Nandlall and the PPP regime”, the statement said.

According to the coalition, it stands with the nurses and will fight against any attempt to terminate any contract or file charges against them for their protest action.
