GTT announces free mobile service for doctors and nurses during COVID-19 fight

Guyana’s leading telecommunications provider, GTT, has announced that it will be offering free mobile services to doctors and nurses as they remain on the frontline in the fight against the coronavirus.

Speaking during an online press conference this midday, GTT Chief Executive Officer Justin Nedd said the company wanted to show its appreciation and encouragement to the doctors and nurses and other health care professionals who have been on the frontline of the fight against the coronavirus.

He said the doctors and nurses would have to register through the medical council and the nurse’s association to benefit from the initiative. The company is examining ways that other health workers could also benefit from the initiative.

Nedd explained that the facility will allow them to make free calls and it does not matter whether they’ll be calling a GTT number or a number for the other network.

“We are all in this together and we have got to help each other, this is not a time for competition”, he said.

The facility will remain in place for as long as the fight in Guyana continues against the coronavirus.

GTT stores across the country closed their doors from today as part of the company’s efforts to encourage social distancing. The CEO announced that bill payments could be done via the mobile money app or through other online bill payment methods.

He said GTT wants to ensure the safety of both staff members and customers during this time.

Nedd assured that GTT will not be doing any layoffs at this time, although it has assigned new tasks to some workers who might be affected by the store closures. He said for those not given new tasks, they will be paid most of their salaries during this time.

The CEO said as an essential service provider, GTT will not be locking down its operations, but staff members will remain on duty, even in remote instances to keep the country connected.

GTT also plans to assist caregivers for the elderly with gift baskets. Additionally, the company has launched a Supporting Our Guyanese Heroes fund, which allows its customers to contribute to the fight against COVID-19 using the MMG Merchant Code 08173.
