GRA says security company confirms that guards responsible for liquor theft

The Guyana Revenue Authority on Saturday announced that Professional Guard Services (PGS), which has the contract for security of the GRA’s warehouse, has confirmed that staff from its service were behind the removal of more than 100 cases of high-priced seized liquor from the GRA’s Eccles warehouse.

According to a statement from the Revenue Authority, “the privately contracted security firm, Professional Guard Services (PGS), having received and reviewed the security footage of the activities at GRA’s Warehouse facility, has positively identified personnel from its service as being actively involved in the criminal act and the suspects have since named their accomplices.”

The GRA did not name the accomplishes or indicate whether the accomplices are linked to the GRA, but it noted that the security officers were questioned in the presence of their Supervisors, Officers from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and staff of the GRA’s Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) and are now in police custody.

The GRA says it continues to hold the security company responsible for the loss and is awaiting the necessary response before considering further action.

“It should be noted that GRA’s Internal Audit Division is currently engaged in a comprehensive audit of the warehouse to determine whether other thefts may have occurred and to ascertain possible weaknesses in the system of internal control that could have contributed to and prevented a more timely disclosure of such occurrences.”

The company also revealed that the external Auditors and the State Auditors have also been briefed of the situation.

The more than $6 Million worth of liquor was discovered missing from the bond last week during a check of items that would have been seized by smugglers by the Revenue Agency.

The matter was only made public after the Commissioner General of the GRA, Khurshid Sattaur was contacted by News Source for a comment and details of the grand theft liquor.
