Less than one hour after three men were charged for the grenade throwing attack outside the Kaieteur News office on Wednesday last, Police Commissioner (acting) David Ramnarine said the police investigators are still hunting the “intellectual authors” of the crime.
Mr. Ramnarine engaged media operatives at the Police Headquarters, Eve Leary and described the crime as dastardly and coward.
He said from the investigation conducted by the police, it is believed that the motive was to drive fear, particularly in staffers of the newspapers.
Ramnarine said if the live grenade had exploded it would have caused damage to property and possibly claim lives, but he noted that the throwing incident was done to cause fear without the concern of injury to persons.
“As the Police understand the plan was contemplated on (June) 2nd, developed on the 3rd and executed on the night of the 4th,” he said.
The acting Commissioner said the investigation remains open and the police are looking for at least two other persons of interest in the matter.
One of those persons is Shemar Wilson called ‘Abdue’ of North Sophia.
The acting Top Cop said too that when assessed, the investigation epitomizes diligence and resilience of criminal investigators.
He believes the Police Force has the capacity to fully investigate and prosecute the suspects.
Three men, 30-year-old Janiel Howard of Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, 25-year-old Leroy Williams, of Durban Backlands and 36-year-old Alfie Garraway of Norton Street were jointly charged when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
The grenade was hurled outside the Newspaper as staffers gathered for a wake for crime journalist, Dale Andrews. (By Kurt Campbell)
