Armed with placards denouncing the US Government’s recent actions in neighboring Venezuela, a small group of local rights activists picketed the US Embassy in Georgetown this morning.
The group is demanding an end to what they describe as “U.S imperialism, extrajudicial killings and violations of regional sovereignty.”
Standing on the picket line, Rights activist and Attorney-at-Law, Christopher Ram, said there must be respect for International Law. He told reporters that the US actions in Venezuela last Saturday which saw the arrest and removal of the country’s President, was in clear breach of international accepted and respected principles.
“I would like to see the United States behaves differently and in accordance with international law. It is as simple as that, that’s all we are asking,” Ram said, while adding that “the invasion of Venezuela, and the killing of innocent people” were clear violation of international laws.
Adding her voice, longtime human and social rights activist, Vanda Radzik, told reporters that the US has disrupted the Region as a zone of peace.
“For decades we have always been a zone of peace in the Caribbean and it one fell swoop Donald Trump, who is an illegal and disgraceful person, should never ever be near world leadership, and there you go, we now have bombardments in the waters of Trinidad and Tobago, you now have bombardments in Venezuela which have killed a number of civilians, we still don’t know how many, and we have been listening to Venezuelans who are part of the international community, that body count is yet to be determined. It is a disgrace,” Radzik said.
She said the US “invasion” of Venezuela has “turned the clock back” on what it means to be a sovereign nation within Latin America and Caribbean.
Both Radzik and Ram called on the Government to come out in condemnation of the actions of the US, but President Irfaan Ali has already made clear Guyana’s support of the US in its fight to combat the nacro-trade and restore democracy in Venezuela.
“Where is the evidence that a Trinidadian fisher boats are part of a narcotic ring and where is the evidence actually that Maduro for better or for worse is also a narco trafficker. What we are asking for is show us the evidence and you need to do that the proper way. You cannot just go in there and abduct and kidnap the president of another country, a sovereign country because the reason is oil,” Radzik said.
Former President Donald Ramotar has also come out in condemnation of the capture and detention of the Venezuelan President and his wife and the military action in Caracas.
