A 23-year-old student of the Government Technical Institute was killed on the spot early on Friday morning when he reportedly lost control of the car he was driving and slammed into a truck which was traveling in the opposite direction.
Dead is Torick McLennon of Mahaicony. The accident occurred in the Mahaicony area just after 5am. Persons in the area reported hearing a loud crashing sound and when they ran to the scene they saw the lifeless body of the young man trapped in the mangled wreck along with three other persons.
It took over an hour before the young man’s body could have been pulled from the wreckage. Firefighters had to be called to the scene and were forced to cut the car apart to remove the man’s body. By the time he was pulled from the wreck, he was already dead.
Several of his friends gathered at the scene and were left in a state of shock and disbelief. Many of his classmates and relatives left messages of sympathy on his Facebook page describing their disbelief in his death.
The accident came on the eve of the start of road safety month in Guyana. Already for this year, over 100 persons have lost their lives in road accidents. Speeding is believed to be the leading cause of road deaths in Guyana.
