As multiple US News agencies report that the US Government has started military action in Venezuela and as the Venezuelan Government declares a state of emergency and its right to defend itself, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali this morning said Guyana is closely monitoring the situation.
In a brief comment to News Source this morning as bombs reigned down on Caracas in neighbouring Venezuela, President Ali said his priority is the safety and security of Guyana
“We have been monitoring the situation all morning. The priority is the safety and security of our Country. The Defence Board, the leadership of the GDF and our security forces are fully mobilized in accordance with our security plans. We have spoken to the SG (Secretary General) of Caricom and as more information becomes available we will further update the population”, President Ali told News Source.
Early on Saturday morning, Venezuela was rattled by multiple aerial strikes on Caracas and low flying military aircraft.
CBS News and other US News Agencies reported from multiple sources within the US Government that the US had launched military action in Venezuela.
The US has been threatening military action inside Venezuela for months as it has been striking suspected drug carrying vessels in the Caribbean sea and the eastern Pacific ocean. Over 100 persons were killed in those strikes that the US said forms part of its global fight against the drug trade.
The US Government has accused the Nicolas Maduro administration in Venezuela of being directly involved in the drug trade, while calling for Maduro to leave office.
The Venezuelan Government has complained to the UN about the attacks, describing it as “aggression”.
