Guyana Forestry Commission sends staff home over Marriott tar fumes

Senior and junior staff members attached to the Guyana Forestry Commission were given the day off on Wednesday as they complained bitterly about fumes that had engulfed their offices from the nearby Marriott Hotel.

According to reports, construction workers at the Marriott who are still carrying out works to the back of the property, have been using tar to paint large gas and other tanks in the compound of the hotel.

As the sun came out, the fumes from the tar became unbearable for employees of the Forestry Commission and a decision was taken by the Management of the Commission to allow staff members to go home as the fumes took over their work stations.

“All staff members were told if they believe the smell and the fumes is detrimental to their health, they could go home for the day and so many of them did just that”, one forestry officer told News Source.

When News Source visited the office of the Forestry Commission, security personnel were spotted wearing face masks and we were told that the majority of staff members had already left the premises.

News Source made an attempt to speak with the Head of the Forestry Commission, James Singh but he was reportedly tied up in meetings.

A number of persons who were expected to transact business with the Forestry Commission on Wednesday were told to return on Thursday or later in the week.

At the Marriott Hotel, guests did not appear affected by the fumes since the painting was taking place to the back of the property and closer to the GFC offices.

An official at the Marriott told News Source that the hotel was unaware of the situation and will look into it.
