Guyana wants Ernie Ross to explain position in T&T Scandal

Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett has announced that she has written to the Honorary Consul in Trinidad and Tobago Ernie Ross requesting that he explains his alleged possible involvement in the scandal that led to the Trinidadian Prime Minister firing her Attorney General and the Minister of National Security.

The Guyana Foreign Minister was asked about the issue at a Wednesday press conference after reports surfaced out of Trinidad that Ross who is also an advertising and campaign executive, may have had knowledge of the alleged witness tampering conversations that led to the actions of the Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Ross has been serving as the Guyana Honorary Consul in Trinidad and Tobago for a number of years.

Foreign Minister Rodrigues-Birkett explained that while there is nothing that could prevent an Honorary Consul from being involved in the politics of the country he resides, the Government of Guyana still wants a clear understanding of his alleged involvement.

She said “Honorary Consuls are Honorary Consuls and they are not prevented from being involved in the political life of the country but I have asked Mr. Ross to provide me with information on this matter because I do not know if what is in the media, if he is culpable or anything like that. But I will be concerned if I read anything about Honorary Consuls”.

Minister Rodrigues-Birkett added that there are Honorary Consuls in Guyana who are politicians and would comment on issues and there would be no report filed against them since they are “not diplomats”.

The Trinidad Express has reported that Ross has denied has denied trying to influence Trinidad’s former Minister of National Security Gary Griffith to change his story in the ongoing David West versus Anand Ramlogan saga.

According to the Express “Ross said it was not his place to influence Griffith’s decision to be a witness in West’s case, in which he (West) alleges that ex-attorney general Ramlogan had asked him to withdraw his statement in the defamation case against Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley in exchange for the post of Police Complaints Authority (PCA) director.”
